Ash-Glazed Platters

Description
‘The wood and plant ashes in the ash glazes are a complex mix of minerals captured by the plant during growth,’ Jonathan explains. ‘The clay's own mineral makeup also lends its influence to the final result. A paler low-iron clay allows this ash-glaze to form an even, glassy surface when thick enough, where a darker iron-rich clay encourages the glaze to run in rivulets over its surface. While results from the kiln can be learned to a degree through repetition and study, these reactions continue to defy predictions. In essence, I attempt to set up simple circumstances and then hand it over to the materials to work their magic.’
