Slices

Description
The tree which was the source of the wood used for Slice was felled near Kirkcaldy in Fife. The texture of the bark hinted at what lay below the surface: oak grain peppered with patches of burr. The resulting variation in density and grain direction yielded some interesting and unpredictable results, if allowed to dry and distort naturally. So the series centred on eight identical discs at 35mm thickness, turned to a simple form, and with a thinness allowing the wood to move unhindered as it dried. The eight pieces started as near identical shallow forms, each finishing with an individual character.
Diameter 40cm, height 9cm.
