Description

‘I wanted to create an object with an invitation to touch and play,’ Katie Rose Johnston explains. ‘Each playboard contains a plinth, two handmade ceramic props, two beach stones and a polished copper mirror. There is no final form as such. The composition takes its shape through the fancy of the player; objects can be added and removed, balanced or ordered as desired. I enjoy the contrast and similarity of different materials: handmade sits against natural; metallic wild clay sits against solid rough beach stone; polished mirror against textured surface. Different properties of each material are reflected in another. The playboards each have a stone that has been collected from the East coast near Edinburgh (and is used for the decals on the boxes and packaging), as well as a beach stone from a favourite beach on the North East coastline above Inverness. The project is wrapped up in a handmade box.’
