Description

The Quaich, a Celtic two-handled drinking cup, has its origins in the tradition of Scottish hospitality. Sharing a cup was seen as a sign of trust between the people drinking from it. It is offered and taken with both hands so the drinker could not hold a weapon at the same time and the sharing of the drink was a guarantee that it had not been poisoned. King James VI of Scotland presented a quaich to Anne of Denmark at their marriage in 1589. Drinking from the same cup has been a symbol of love and trust between a couple on their wedding day, ever since. Our quaichs at Bard are handmade from sterling silver by Sarah Cave. They have an ancient quality and a pleasing modernity. We particularly enjoy the pure geometric forms and the relationship between the handles and the cup.
