Description

“This is an ash stool, with a charred panel that has been carved into, inspired by stone carvings discovered at the Ness of Brodgar in Stenness on Orkney. The Ness is a monumental Neolithic archaeological site and I feel proud and lucky to live nearby. It’s been a dig since 2004 and we’ve barely scratched the surface. I find it amazing that someone carved these stones thousands of years ago. I wonder what that person would think if they saw their inscription on my stool. We don’t know what the markings mean, but it must have had some significance to have been carved into stone. Orkney is a special place. There’s something extraordinary around every corner. The more you look, the more you see.” Kevin Gauld

Ash, charred panel.

Height 51cm, width 60cm, depth 31cm.

The Brodgar Stool was first shown at Bard as part of the group exhibition The Grit and The Glamour in November 2023.
