Wild Clay Boxes

Material

Description

“These boxes are each made from wild clay that we have found ourselves. The clay has literally been taken from the ground and used in its natural state, unprocessed. We are interested in minimal intervention to preserve the integrity of the material so it speaks as loudly as it can about the place where it came from. It is less about material transformation and more about preservation. Using a press mould technique doesn’t disturb the clay so it results in a stratified or marbled effect, more like cut stone. The form we have chosen is intentionally simple with a generous surface to best show off natural variations within the material. We are drawn to the idea of a box as an object that holds something precious.” Viv Lee and Jonathan Wade

Height 7cm, width 15cm, depth 11cm.

Wild Clay Boxes were first shown at Bard as part of the group exhibition The Grit and The Glamour in November 2023.
