What does Scottishness mean to you?
Scottishness is a deep-felt sense of pride and belonging; love for a landscape and people shaped by natural materials, craft, folklore and community. A culture less about where you’re from as the connections you seek to make; skills, knowledge, stories, and the spirit of passing them on. It’s a culture of making and innovation; a land with strong craft heritage, but home to makers with the perspective and humility to continually reimagine traditional processes and indiginous materials.
What role does craft have in daily life?
Craft plays a vital role in daily life; objects being inherently functional, but grounding the user through a connection to maker and material. Craft has the ability to transform mundane tasks into mindful routines; it invites us to engage with material, form and process. Unlike mass-produced goods, crafted objects celebrate quirks of the handmade; these objects embody an authenticity mass-produced products can not. And in a fast-paced, digital and increasingly artificial world, the tangible nature of craft invites contemplative interaction with our senses.
